It was one of the first, and may have been the first, purpose built mosque in the United States. It only remained open, however, for a few years and was sold mid decade. The problems included noise due to its location, and funding may have also been a problem.
The opening itself reflected a growing Muslim population in Detroit, of which Highland Park is part.
